“Better Than Delivery” Dust

Even as someone who cooks for a living, there are Tuesday nights where my “culinary vision” is just whatever I can melt cheese onto in under fifteen minutes.

This homemade pizza seasoning is my “break in case of emergency” kitchen hack. It’s savory, flavorful, and has just enough kick to make people ask, “Wait, did you make this dough from scratch?” (Feel free to lie and say yes; I won’t tell).

Whether you’re upgrading a $5 frozen pie or finishing off a labor-intensive sourdough crust, this blend is the glow-up your spice cabinet deserves.

What makes it special:

  • The little extra something your pizza needs. If you’re the type to reach for the jars of red pepper flakes and oregano on the table when you go out for pizza, you will love this pizza seasoning!
  • More versatile than the name implies. Use this pizza seasoning in the sauce, in the crust, or sprinkle it over the cheese on your pizza. You can add it to olive oil for a dip, sprinkle it on pasta, or give air fryer broccoli an instant upgrade.
  • Made with pantry staples. Because you probably have the ingredients in your pantry, that means you pretty much have an endless supply of pizza seasoning.
  • So easy to make. If you couldn’t tell from my taco seasoning, everything bagel seasoning, and blackening seasoning, I LOVE homemade seasoning recipes. They taste better than store-bought, they’re customizable, and they take just a few minutes to put together.

Ingredient Notes

You’ll find the measurements for each ingredient in the recipe card below.

  • Dried herbs: The pizza seasoning blend contains a mixture of oregano, basil, thyme, and rosemary.
  • Garlic powder and onion powder: Dehydrated and ground into a powder, garlic and onion powders add essential flavor to the blend. It’s what differentiates pizza seasoning from Italian seasoning which is simply a blend of dried herbs.
  • Kosher salt: I love that you can customize homemade pizza seasoning simply by omitting the salt to make a salt-free version. If salt isn’t an issue for you, feel free to add it.
  • Crushed red pepper flakes: Again, you can customize the spice level of your seasoning simply by adjusting the amount of red pepper flakes you add. You can leave them out entirely if you prefer a mild pizza seasoning. (It’s very flavorful either way!)

How to Make Pizza Seasoning

Combine. Mix the ingredients together in a small bowl or jar.

Mix. Stir or, if you’re using a jar, shake everything together.

How to Use Pizza Seasoning

  • In pizza: This is the obvious choice! Stir it into any pizza sauce, whether it’s homemade or from a jar, to heighten the flavor. Sprinkle it on the pizza before or after baking. It’s especially good on frozen pizzas which can be a little bland. You can even work it right into the pizza dough.
  • Pastas: Stir it into sauces like marinara or spaghetti sauce, or sprinkle it on top of a bowl of crockpot spaghetti or cooked spaghetti squash.
  • Garlic bread: Mix it into the butter for Texas toast garlic bread, or sprinkle it onto store-bought garlic bread before or after baking.
  • Veggies: Add it to roasted green beans or roasted cauliflower before or after roasting. It’s pretty amazing on sautéed zucchini or sautéed cabbage, too.
  • As a vinaigrette or marinade: Dress up your salads with a simple vinaigrette made with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and a spoonful of pizza seasoning. (The ratio of oil to vinegar in vinaigrette is usually 3:1.) You could use the vinaigrette as a marinade, too.

Variations You Can Try

  • Parmesan pizza seasoning. Add shelf-stable Parmesan cheese to the pizza seasoning (the kind that comes in the green container).
  • White pizza seasoning. Add dried lemon zest to the mixture. This works well for flatbread that’s made with olive oil instead of sauce, or pizza made with Alfredo sauce.
A hand holds a bowl of dried pizza seasoning with a measuring spoon, next to a pepperoni pizza and a small bowl of shredded cheese.

Storage

Store this pizza seasoning in a small spice jar or other airtight container in a cool, dry place like your pantry. It’ll stay fresh and flavorful for up to 6 months, assuming the herbs and spices you used were fresh to start with.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Mix all ingredients together in a small jar or airtight container.
1 tablespoon dried oregano, 2 teaspoons dried basil, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 1 teaspoon dried thyme, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon dried crushed rosemary, ½ teaspoon kosher salt, ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Makes ¼ cup.

Notes

  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.
  • Dried rosemary: I use crushed rosemary, as opposed to dried whole rosemary leaves, because the pieces are smaller and not as sharp. Don’t use ground herbs (powdered) because the flavor will be much too intense.
  • To use:
    • Sprinkle 1 to 2 teaspoons over pizza before or after baking.
    • Add to pizza sauce or marinara for a flavor boost.
    • Dress up plain cooked pasta with olive oil, parmesan cheese and pizza seasoning.
    • Sprinkle pizza seasoning on roasted vegetables (before or after roasting) or cooked spaghetti squash
    • Mix with olive oil for dipping pizza crust or breadsticks.
