Air Fryer Apple Fritters with Apple Cider Glaze

I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge doughnut fan. I know, I know, I’m weird. Who doesn’t like donuts?! I just don’t care for the oily taste of deep fried bakery doughnuts. Plus, deep frying is such a big messy project.
Air fryer fritters, on the other hand, are right up my alley. Crisp, but not greasy, filled with nice sized chunks of real apple, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, and covered with sweet cider glaze — what’s not to like?
About these air fryer apple fritters:
I don’t want to mislead you. Air fryer apple fritters aren’t an exact copycat of their bakery cousins. They’re really more like a muffin than a doughnut. You know how everyone likes the crisp top of a muffin? When you make these fritters, it’s like a crisp muffin top in every bite with the bonus of delicious glaze.
The batter is easy. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, apple cider, and vanilla. Add flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg, and gently blend the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Fold in a chopped apple. I like Gala or Honeycrisp apples but you can use any firm apple.
Air fry the fritters for 6 minutes, flip, and fry for 4 more minutes. While the fritters are baking, make a simple glaze using powdered sugar, apple cider, cinnamon, and vanilla. Dip the fritters into the glaze and let them dry on a wire rack until the glaze hardens a bit.

Air fry vs. deep fry?
Well, there’s no question as to which one I prefer! Try:
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1/3 cup apple cider
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 large apple, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes (about 2 cups)
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup apple cider
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- Line the bottom of the air fryer basket with parchment paper and spray with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, combine milk, apple cider, eggs, and vanilla. Add flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss dry ingredients together a little before stirring into wet ingredients. Do not overmix. Fold in apples.
- Use an ice cream scoop or two tablespoons, drop batter, making 3 or 4 fritters at a time, into air fryer. Spritz with more nonstick cooking spray.
- Cook at 400ºF for 6 minutes, flip, and cook for additional 4 minutes or until golden brown.
- While the fritters cook, make the glaze. In a medium sized bowl, combine glaze ingredients, stirring until smooth.
- Remove fritters to cooling rack placed on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Dip the fritters individually in the glaze, using two forks to hold them. Place glazed fritters back on cooling rack to finish cooling and for glaze to set.
- Yield depends on size of fritters.
- Baking instructions: Preheat oven to 400°F. Scoop batter onto greased baking sheet (or line with parchment paper) and bake for 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Glaze as directed.
