I know I’m sooooooorta pushing the limits of winter here with beef stew seasoning mix. I have a beef stew recipe coming too–oh well, I’ve never claimed to be a perfect blogger.  I make what sounds good! Plus, one of my readers sent me an email requesting this recipe. My taco seasoning recipe has been so popular and I don’t blame people for wanting to eat real food instead of some chemical mixture packed with sodium to make it taste semi-decent.

I gladly accepted the challenge of making an all-natural beef stew seasoning that would add great flavor to stew but still allow you to control the amount of sodium and spices. I absolutely love the way this turned out.

Updated: Check out stew I made with it.

What is in Beef Stew Seasoning Mix?

  • Flour – it helps the stew thicken!
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Parsley
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Celery Seed
  • Onion Powder
  • Salt and Pepper

These spices and herbs together make the most flavorful beef stew – you’ll be ditching the packets in no time! It works on the stovetop or in a slow cooker recipe.

As a side note, if you’re not a huge fan of pepper, make sure to read the comments! Some people find this to be too peppery. You’re only using 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture per 1 pound of stew meat and you want it to be well seasoned, so I obviously think it’s great the way it’s written! But you can always add more pepper at the end, so if you’re unsure, start with a smaller amount.

Mixed this up last weekend and can’t wait to try it tomorrow night on my son’s first night home on Spring (but still cool) break!. My husband has high blood pressure so I value recipes I can control the sodium also!

this was great, thank you so much. i had a recipe from my local supermarket tthat called for a packet of beef stew seasoning, and i never buy that pre-packaged stuff. your recipe came up first on a yahoo-search and i am convinced made this stew a winner.

I’m SO glad you liked it! Thank you for your feedback!

  3. Ang says:

I thought this had WAY too much black pepper as some others did, and I used only 1 T. Not sure what I’m going to do with the rest of the mix I have…..luckily they ate it anyway, but everyone had at least 2 glasses of water with dinner!

  4. MsJoanne says:

Ok, I had to come back. I used this seasoning and it was fabulous. I loved it! Likely one of the best beef stew dishes I have ever made.

Thank you for a great recipe!

Oooh just saw this! I’m so happy you liked it!

I am trying this today. I tasted the mix and found, for our liking, it needed more salt and more pepper (yes, we like pepper a lot). I also am adding some garlic powder. Additionally, I (heresy, I know) took one cube of Knorr beef seasoning and mashed it into powder in the mix (rubbing it between my fingers until it dissolved into the mix). When I tasted the final mix, I find it quite nice. I will likely add some Worcestershire sauce into the stew while it’s cooking, as well.

    Thanks for the recipe!

Those sound like great adaptations! Hope you love it in the stew! Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  6. Lynette Vinson says:

    OK, just needed salt. Perfect!

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

Thanks for the feedback! I’m always tend to be shy on salt because my husband is really sensitive to it.

  7. HelenMary says:

Nice seasoning. I always add a little cornstarch to my flour mixture. Coat the meat and then stir some of the flour mix in while adding the extra water during cooking. It helps it start thickening.

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

      Thanks for the tips!

How can you start a gluten free recipe with 1 cup of flour.

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

I never claimed that this recipe was gluten free! :)

  10. Jod says:

Ok so I blew it and put ALL the mix into the crock pot! 2-3 pd. roast had already been browned and veggies were already in with a low sodium beef broth which I had watered down. Can this dish be saved?

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

oh no! That is a lot of seasoning. Unfortunately a) I’m too late and b) I don’t think it can be saved without A LOT more ingredients. How did it turn out?
