I know I’m sooooooorta pushing the limits of winter here with beef stew seasoning mix. I have a beef stew recipe coming too–oh well, I’ve never claimed to be a perfect blogger.  I make what sounds good! Plus, one of my readers sent me an email requesting this recipe. My taco seasoning recipe has been so popular and I don’t blame people for wanting to eat real food instead of some chemical mixture packed with sodium to make it taste semi-decent.

I gladly accepted the challenge of making an all-natural beef stew seasoning that would add great flavor to stew but still allow you to control the amount of sodium and spices. I absolutely love the way this turned out.

Updated: Check out stew I made with it.

What is in Beef Stew Seasoning Mix?

  • Flour – it helps the stew thicken!
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Parsley
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Celery Seed
  • Onion Powder
  • Salt and Pepper

These spices and herbs together make the most flavorful beef stew – you’ll be ditching the packets in no time! It works on the stovetop or in a slow cooker recipe.

As a side note, if you’re not a huge fan of pepper, make sure to read the comments! Some people find this to be too peppery. You’re only using 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture per 1 pound of stew meat and you want it to be well seasoned, so I obviously think it’s great the way it’s written! But you can always add more pepper at the end, so if you’re unsure, start with a smaller amount.

Just found this recipe, but have already added browned beef, onions, potatoes and carrots to the slow cooker. Can this be added to the slow cooker too, or will it now season the mix properly if not added directing to the browning beef?

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

It’s probably too late anyways? But it’s really better if you use it to brown the meat. Hope it worked out for you though!

This was so peppery we couldn’t eat the stew. I am currently preparing a second batch with no pepper and hoping that I can combine the two so I can save the first batch. Otherwise I’m going to have to throw it out. I really wondered if maybe it should be two teaspoons rather than tablespoons. The black pepper was the only thing I could taste, so it isn’t just a matter of preference. I’m just glad I didn’t take the time to grind the pepper myself or it might have eaten through the pan. The rest of the ingredients sound like they’d be quite tasty, but I have no idea because my palate was destroyed by all of the pepper.

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

Sorry to hear it was too peppery for your taste!

I just found this recipe today. We didn’t have cayenne pepper in the house so we left that out. We added 2 tablespoons of granulated garlic too. It smells amazing. I can’t wait until dinner time. We needed it to be gluten free so we used 1/2 cup of corn starch instead of the flour.

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

Great adaptations! Hope you loved the stew!

When I learned about all of the excess junk in packaged taco seasoning, I found a recipe for homemade and I absolutely loved it. Tonight we were having stew and I decided to find a recipe for seasoning instead of using the packaged mix that I was raised on.

I used half the pepper and added less than a teaspoon extra salt during cooking and I left out the cayenne pepper (I was going to use half the amount but the lid had been left open and it was all gross so I threw it out). I love it! I’m not sure about my parents yet. After using the same brand’s mix almost my entire life, trying homemade mixes can be tough for them. I think it’s got a great flavor and love that we can customize it for our family with more or less of anything! Thanks!

Thank you so much for the kind comment!

  6. Sue says:

Me either, pertaining to the reply above. I made crawfish ettoufee last night and would have made more but I ran out of beef stew seasoning mix (which that is what it calls for)…so anyway, I have crawfish left over and so now I won’t waste it. Besides, this is a recipe tradition that I like to make during Mardi Gras season, so hey, I would love to try this instead for next year’s party (instead of package) because they loved it today…and if I modify it next year using this recipe…it will be FABULOUS!

  7. Elaine Wolfe says:

I will be cooking for a gluten free supper. Can I substitute the flour for corn or potato starch?

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

Corn starch would probably work! I haven’t tried it so I can’t promise, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Let me know how it turns out!

    2. Jane Dough says:

brown rice flour works fine for gluten free.

    3. Cwolfe says:

I use tomato paste. Have never used flour. Love it. Same w chili

      1. Rachel Gurk says:

Tomato paste is always a good addition!

  8. Janet Byrnes says:

Tried this recipe for beef stew seasoning today and found it to have way too much pepper. I double checked the recipe after making it , so it was not a mistake in the amount of pepper. I had to add salt for the final seasoning adjustments. Next time I will use only one tablespoon of black pepper and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne, and two tablespoons of salt. Very disappointing.

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

Sorry you didn’t like it! We love this recipe. We eat a low-sodium diet for health reasons so 2T salt would be far too much for us. The great thing about making homemade seasoning rather than buying pre-made packets is that you can adjust for your personal taste! Make a note of those changes and you’ll be all set for next time.

      1. Rene says:

AMEN about too much salt. It’s in so much of the food that we as Americans eat on a daily basis. People wonder why they have high blood pressure, just look at your diet. I watch salt all the time and I don’t have HBP and I don’t want it! Kudos for making it a priority…

  9. Terah says:

I am so excited to try this however I have a question. I usually use the packet and water toss the meat in and leave it in my crock pot. So if I toss the meat in this and then brown it… do I add water to my crock pot when I transfer the browned stew meat? If so how much I am only cooking for 4.
