I know I’m sooooooorta pushing the limits of winter here with beef stew seasoning mix. I have a beef stew recipe coming too–oh well, I’ve never claimed to be a perfect blogger.  I make what sounds good! Plus, one of my readers sent me an email requesting this recipe. My taco seasoning recipe has been so popular and I don’t blame people for wanting to eat real food instead of some chemical mixture packed with sodium to make it taste semi-decent.

I gladly accepted the challenge of making an all-natural beef stew seasoning that would add great flavor to stew but still allow you to control the amount of sodium and spices. I absolutely love the way this turned out.

Updated: Check out stew I made with it.

What is in Beef Stew Seasoning Mix?

  • Flour – it helps the stew thicken!
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Parsley
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Celery Seed
  • Onion Powder
  • Salt and Pepper

These spices and herbs together make the most flavorful beef stew – you’ll be ditching the packets in no time! It works on the stovetop or in a slow cooker recipe.

As a side note, if you’re not a huge fan of pepper, make sure to read the comments! Some people find this to be too peppery. You’re only using 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture per 1 pound of stew meat and you want it to be well seasoned, so I obviously think it’s great the way it’s written! But you can always add more pepper at the end, so if you’re unsure, start with a smaller amount.

I tried the seasoning…it was pretty much ingredients I already used minus a few things…so I gave it a try but I found myself adding the spices I would normally. I am a garlic fanatic so I added garlic powder…a little bit of cumin….dash of brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and a few drops of vinegar. I realize these last few ingredients may sound odd but it gives the stew a flavor that makes your mouth water.

      Your additions sound delicious!

Used this recipe in a pot roast last night, and I found it to be a little bland. I followed the advice of others and cut back on the pepper, and I am glad I did. I am gluten free, so I used brown rice flour as a base and rubbed this into the roast before searing it and placing it in the crock pot.

It’s not intolerable, but the next time I use it , I will use seasoned salt, add garlic powder and keep the black pepper to 2 teaspoons. I will probably kick the cayenne pepper up a notch as well for a little more bite.

I think the only reason I found it bland was that I used about 4 tablespoons on a 2.5 pound roast. Maybe one or two more tablespoons would have tasted better.

No matter what, I’ll keep working with this recipe, as the store bought stuff is full of processed nonsense that can’t be healthy. I can pronounce all the ingredients in this recipe, and it’s a nice compliment to my grass-fed beef. It’s time to get back to eating real food instead of manufactured garbage and calling it food.

This recipe is delicious,,  I too don’t understand all the negative comments on the pepper.  Oh well, to each his own.  I however added the spices after and did not toss in meat.  It was still delicious.  My 3year old daughter had two bowls.

This beef stew seasoning recipe makes the best tasting beef stew I have ever put in my mouth. I made a quart of it today and I have almost eaten it all already, I am on my third bowl full.

  6. Liz says:

I always put horseradish in my beef stew and pot roast it gives it an extra zing and a sweetness especially when added a lot of onions.

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

I love that idea! I bet it’s wonderful!

  7. Kelvin says:

I made this tonight and liked it, I usually just make a grab it stew, just grab whatever. I really don’t understand all the pepper comments that’s the only thing extra I added at the table.I wrote down a copy for when I need to mix another batch. One thing I think people should do is discard your spices if you can’t remember when you bought them

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

Hi Kelvin! Great advice about keeping your pantry stocked with fresh spices. I’m so glad you liked this seasoning mix, thanks for taking the time to come back and leave a comment, it means a lot to me!

  8. Sarah says:

Unfortunately this mix was flavorless in my stew. It made more of a soup rather than a stew. Could’ve been a multitude of factors, however I will not continue using this. Time to go back to packets unless I’m in a pinch. Thanks for sharing it, though!

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

Hi Sarah! Sorry to hear you didn’t like this mix, so many people have loved it! You mentioned that it could have been a multitude of factors – did you do other things differently than you usually do? The seasoning shouldn’t make it a soup since it’s just a powdered mix; perhaps you added too much liquid?

  9. Cindy says:

Your jar of seasoning looks like powder so should I blend all the ingredients in grinder?

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

I used all ground spices so that’s why it’s a powder. No need to grind!

  10. Mimi Sharpe says:

Loved this seasoning recipe! My Aunt, who has always made the best beef stew in the family was balled over by this seasoning and asked immediately for the seasonings I had used. But as said in other reviews — are you sure the 2 tablespoons of pepper isn’t too much? I cut it down to 2 teaspoons as well and was very happy with the results. Probably a matter of taste.
