Almost everyone loves orange juice, and we all know a beer lover. If it isn’t you, I’m sure you know someone who loves to open an ice cold brew on a hot summer day. A beermosa is a delicious blend of fresh orange juice and Belgian wheat beer. It’s smooth, ice cold, fizzy, sweet, and oh-so-refreshing.

Beermosa

Balanced. Your new favorite drink, the beermosa, takes advantage of the flavors of wheat beer that are practically begging for a splash of fresh juice. Orange juice adds acidity and brightness to the beer, mellowing the hops and enhancing the refreshment. The next time you’re reaching for an orange juice with champagne or with vodka, try a wheat beer or even an IPA instead. You’ll be really glad you did!

“Manly.” Putting manly in quotes for obvious reasons, but whether or not it should be this way, some dudes might feel more comfortable sipping on a beermosa than a mimosa at brunch, especially if it’s a hibiscus mimosa with a gorgeous red flower resting in the bottom of the glass.

Easy to make. You can’t beat a two ingredient cocktail!

Best Beer For A Beermosa

Some of the most popular wheat beers contain orange flavor, like Bell’s Oberon from Kalamazoo, Michigan. While not a Belgian wheat, Oberon combines the classic ale flavors with a fruity twist. You’ll find similarly good things happening with Blue Moon Belgian White from Blue Moon Brewing Company in Denver, Colorado, which is probably the most popular and widely available choice. Another great beer for a beermosa is Allagash White from Allagash Brewing Company in Portland, Maine.

Ingredient Notes

  • Orange juice: Choose your favorite brand of refrigerated orange juice or squeeze your own. I like pulp-free for a cocktail because it looks prettier in a glass. Make sure the orange juice is nice and cold. Each beermosa is made with 4 oz. of orange juice.
  • Beer:  A Belgian white goes perfectly with orange juice (see the note for more about beer choices). The beer should be well-chilled! Warm beer won’t cut it for a beermosa. You’ll need 6 oz. of beer per beermosa, which is half of a bottle or can.
  • Orange slice: A classic garnish for Belgian ales, an orange slice is really the only garnish you’ll want to use for a cocktail made with orange juice and beer.

How to Make a Beermosa

Pour chilled orange juice into a large champagne flute or wineglass. Keep in mind that this is a 10 oz. cocktail, so the glass has to be fairly large. Top with cold beer.

Garnish the beermosa with an orange slice, and serve immediately.

Easy Variations

  • Embellish it. Add a teaspoon or two of grenadine for a layered look.
  • Try different flavors. Substitute orange pineapple or orange mango, if you like.
  • Make a pitcher. If you’re planning on serving this cocktail to guests, it’s a good idea to make a pitcher. (I’ve done the math for you on the recipe card below.) Beermosas are best served immediately so I don’t advise making the pitcher ahead of time.

Mimosa/Beermosa Bar

If you’re having a party, consider offering a DIY mimosa bar, with a variety of juices (try lemonade, too!), beer, sparkling wine, and non-alcoholic mixers. Guests can mix and match their own mimosas. Here are a few tips:

  • Make sure all of the beverages are well-chilled, and you have plenty of glasses and garnishes.
  • Label all of the juices they can choose from, and write down the preferred juice to champagne/beer ratio to give people a starting point.
  • Offer Sprite, lemon lime soda, or flavored sparkling water for people who would like a mimosa mocktail, a non-alcoholic version.
  • Have plenty of food for guests to nibble on as they sip their cocktails.

What to Serve With A Beermosa

Brunch: For a fuss-free brunch, serve an egg casserole or quiche that you can prep ahead. I love this easy crescent roll breakfast casserole or crustless quiche. French toast muffins are always a hit, or stuffed French toast. Candied bacon is a must!

Appetizers: A beermosa isn’t limited to brunches. It’s a super refreshing beverage to enjoy on the patio or deck. Serve it with olive oil roasted almonds, whipped feta with crackers or crostini, or home-baked tortilla chips with smoky chipotle salsa.

Ingredients 

  • 4 oz. orange juice
  • 6 oz. Belgian wheat beer (half of a 12 oz. bottle or can)
  • 1 orange slice, for garnish

Instructions 

  • Pour orange juice into a fluted glass.
    4 oz. orange juice
  • Top with beer, and garnish with an orange slice.
    6 oz. Belgian wheat beer
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Make a pitcher: This cocktail can be made in any volume, including a pitcher. Keep the 2:3 ratio of orange juice and beer. For a 60 oz. pitcher (six 10 oz. glasses), you would need 24 oz. orange juice (6 cups) and 36 oz. of beer (3 bottles/cans). 
  • Beer choices: I used Allagash White, but Blue Moon is probably the most popular and widely available choice. Bell’s Oberon is a good choice, too. 
  • Variations: Add a teaspoon or two of grenadine for a layered look. Try using different flavored orange juices such as orange pineapple or orange mango.
