I know I’m sooooooorta pushing the limits of winter here with beef stew seasoning mix. I have a beef stew recipe coming too–oh well, I’ve never claimed to be a perfect blogger.  I make what sounds good! Plus, one of my readers sent me an email requesting this recipe. My taco seasoning recipe has been so popular and I don’t blame people for wanting to eat real food instead of some chemical mixture packed with sodium to make it taste semi-decent.

I gladly accepted the challenge of making an all-natural beef stew seasoning that would add great flavor to stew but still allow you to control the amount of sodium and spices. I absolutely love the way this turned out.

Updated: Check out stew I made with it.

What is in Beef Stew Seasoning Mix?

  • Flour – it helps the stew thicken!
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Parsley
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Celery Seed
  • Onion Powder
  • Salt and Pepper

These spices and herbs together make the most flavorful beef stew – you’ll be ditching the packets in no time! It works on the stovetop or in a slow cooker recipe.

As a side note, if you’re not a huge fan of pepper, make sure to read the comments! Some people find this to be too peppery. You’re only using 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture per 1 pound of stew meat and you want it to be well seasoned, so I obviously think it’s great the way it’s written! But you can always add more pepper at the end, so if you’re unsure, start with a smaller amount.

Thank you for this – this is a great recipe and I love knowing what i’m puttting in my food for my family, rather than a packet off the shelf! We dial back the heat a little for the kids, but it has been our go-to for some time. We also use it for our roast beef as well and it LOVE our lelftovers with this seasoning for hash the next morning.

I would skip the cayenne pepper. It doesn’t go with beef stew. Beef stew is suppose to be savory not hot . Other than that it had great flavor.

      1. Rachel Gurk says:

To each their own! I like a little heat. :)

Wow.. This was VERY close to the McCormick Bag ‘n Season beef stew mix that they sadly discontinued. I took the advice about the bk pepper and I’m glad I did cuz even using less (I used 1 rounded tbs instead of the 2 tbs written) it was just a tab too much for me. TO COOK LIKE MCCORMICK’S BAG ‘N SEASON: I browned the seasoned beef in a frypan then added that to a dutch oven pan, added veggies to the pan (2 potatoes, 4 carrots, 2 celery stalks all cut up into bite size pieces, 2 crushed cloves of garlic), then I added about a cup of beef broth to the frypan and brought that to a boil and using my wooden spoon to loosen up the dried bits on the bottom of the pan I then added that to the beef and veggies, mixed it all together, cover pan and cooked at 250 for 1 1/2 hours then served over rice. It was good! Mine was bland cuz I clearly didn’t add enough seasoning to my beef but you could tell it was good and I will be making this again and paying attention to how much of this seasoning I use next time and I am DEFINITELY adding this to my recipe box! THANK YOU!!

  7. Donna says:

Can you use other types of flour instead of all purpose?

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

I haven’t tested it, but it should work. It might affect how much it thickens the stew. Are you thinking a GF flour?

  8. Cherrie says:

Tried it today. Turned out great. Had to use onion and celery fresh didnt have dry. Added more of a few don’t know if brand or age of my spice. Would highly recommend this.

Just finished dinner using your seasoning mix for the beef stew. Delicious!
I did tweak it a bit. Omitted salt but, added celery salt instead of celery seeds. Also added 3 tbls Lawrys seasoned salt, omitted cayenne pepper and only about 1 tsp of black ground pepper.
    Thank you, Rachel!

  10. Shannon says:

Excited to try this today, I was looking at the spice packet at the store today and thought no way!

I have a question – if I am going to thicken with arrow root or cornstarch (gluten free) – do I add those to the spice mixture before browning the meat, or do I just use spices and thicken afterwards? Thank you

    1. Rachel Gurk says:

I would add cornstarch in afterwards as a slurry. I haven’t worked a lot with arrow root so I’m not sure if you need to mix it into a slurry to prevent it from clumping like you do with cornstarch, but regardless, I’d add it at the end. I hope you like it!

      1. Terry L Henderson says:

I made this with arrowroot. Added half cup to the spice mix then at the end I make a slurry with a quarter cup cooked broth and2 tablespoons arrowroot. Came out thick, harry and delicious.

        1. Rachel Gurk says:

I’m glad to know it worked with arrowroot. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!

    2. Rachel Gurk says:

Oh and also this probably goes without saying, but without the flour in the mixture, you’ll want to use a lot less when you’re seasoning your meat. :)
