Strawberry watermelon slushie is an easy and refreshing summer spritzer, with a cocktail option.
Recipe Overview
Why you’ll love it: Make your leftover watermelon into a refreshing summer drink!
How long it takes: 5 minutes
Equipment you’ll need: blender
Servings: 1 (but it’s super easy to make more)
Juicy strawberries and watermelon, with a touch of lime and a spritz of sparkling water, blended into an icy refreshing drink is summer perfection. It’s slushy, it’s spritzy, it’s refreshing and it is summer in a glass.
It’s a great tasting drink that is non-alcoholic. Great for those of us who happen to not be drinking alcohol for one reason or another.
Recently I went to a graduation open house with my husband and daughter, and it was a hot, beautiful day. I watched as he drank an ice-cold beer and I drank a bottle of water. Ho-hum! Parties should be required to serve fun drinks for pregnant ladies and other non-drinkers, don’t you think?
This strawberry watermelon spritzer won’t leave you longing for an ice-cold beer or a vodka lemonade. It has plenty of refreshing flavor!
P.S. If you want, add a shot of vodka to your spritzer to make a cocktail. Totally up to you! Or try frosé (a frozen rosé slushie) or a frozen Sangria slushie.
I’ll run through the basics of this beverage recipe but as always, look for the recipe card near the end of the post for complete instructions, measurements, and nutrition information.
What You’ll Need
- Watermelon: This recipe is a great way to use up that extra watermelon you may have. Make sure it’s a seedless watermelon or you’ll have to pick out the seeds.
- Frozen Strawberries: The strawberries are frozen so you get the slushie effect. Other frozen fruit can be substituted.
- Fresh Lime Juice: A good squeeze of lime brightens up the flavor and keeps it from becoming too sweet.
- Sparkling Water: Either plain or flavored is fine. Sparkling water is carbonated and makes the drink fizzy. It’s what makes this beverage a “spritzer.”
How To Make This Recipe
Put ingredients into a blender. You’ll need a blender to make your slushie. Simply add the watermelon, frozen berries, and lime juice to the blender.
Process until smooth. Give it all a whirl until the mixture is nice and smooth.
Add sparkling water. Pour it into a glass, either over ice or just as it is. Top it with sparkling water.
Add garnishes. Garnish your slushie spritzer with a slice of lime and a fresh strawberry. Add a couple of festive straws and you’re on your way to cool summertime bliss.
Make it your own
There are lots of ways to vary this drink:
- Make a double or triple batch. Why not, you already have the blender out!
- Make it a slushie. Add ice when blending for a slushier drink.
- Try different fruit combos. Use frozen blueberries, peaches, mango or another fruit of your choice instead of the strawberries. Substitute a different fruit for the watermelon.
- Substitute a flavored sparkling water. Add a flavored sparkling water drink, like LaCroix or Bubly. There are lots of options that are really popular right now.
- Use lemon instead of lime. Instead of lime juice, add a squirt of lemon juice. Garnish with a fancy little lemon twist. Or try watermelon lemonade with mint (cocktail option included).
- Make it sweeter. Add simple syrup, agave, or sugar, to taste. 7-up or a different lemon-lime soda can be used instead of sparkling water for a sweeter drink.

Ingredients
- 4 cups seedless watermelon, cubed and frozen for at least 24 hours (see note)
- ¼ cup water
- 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (from 1 lime)
- 2 tablespoons honey, or to taste (substitute sugar if desired)
- Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)
- Lime slices for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Place the frozen watermelon, water, lime juice, and honey in a blender.
- Blend on high speed until all the ingredients are fully combined and the mixture becomes slushy and smooth.
- Taste the mixture and adjust the sweetness with more honey (or sugar) if needed. If it’s too thin, add a few ice cubes and blend again. If it’s too thick, add a little water and blend again.
- Serve immediately garnished with a sprig of fresh mint and a slice of lime.
Notes
- How to freeze watermelon: To keep the watermelon cubes from freezing into one solid mass, arrange them in a single layer, sides not touching as much as possible, on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Freeze until the cubes are solid and then transfer to an airtight container or freezer bag until ready to use.T
- Try different fruit combos: Substitute frozen strawberries, blueberries, peaches, mango, or another fruit of your choice for a portion of the watermelon.
- Make it a cocktail: Add chilled vodka, white (silver) rum, or white tequila (silver or blanco), to taste.
- Recipe completely revised 3/2024 (previously strawberry watermelon slushie spritzer).

This sounds great Rachel. It’s such a shame there weren’t other drink options. I hate how it’s one extreme or the other at parties.

Love it, so refreshing! I always have some non-alcoholic good stuff at parties. I’m not much on alcohol plus the kids need special drinks too. This one looks perfect.
