Lattes are perfect for any day of the year. An iced latte will keep you cool in the summer, and a hot latte is just what you need when the mercury drops. This cinnamon dolce latte is one of my favorites!

Dolce latte can be literally translated from the Italian to “sweet milk” and refers to coffee drinks made with espresso, steamed milk, and sugar.

Homemade Cinnamon Dolce Latte

Make your own coffee shop treat. One of the best Starbucks drinks is definitely a cinnamon dolce latte. It’s sweet, creamy, and has the perfect balance of milk, espresso, and cinnamon. The downside of the Starbucks version (besides the price tag!) is that it’s made with cinnamon syrup which makes the drink extra sweet. A homemade cinnamon latte delivers all the flavor you’re craving but with less sugar and without the coffee shop markup.

Specialty coffee drinks are easy. Making a latte at home is actually pretty uncomplicated and you won’t need any special equipment. Once you give this latte recipe a try, you’ll see how painless it is to skip the coffee shop and enjoy the convenience of making your own coffee drinks.

Made to order. A cinnamon latte can be made with any kind of milk. In general, whole milk will be creamier but if you’re used to a lighter version of a latte, you’ll be just fine with a lower fat content in your milk. If you prefer dairy-free lattes, try barista-specific versions of non-dairy milk, like Oatly’s Barista oat milk which is formulated to be extra creamy. You can easily adjust the sweetness or the size of the latte.

Ingredient Notes

  • Espresso or coffee: A latte is typically made with one or two shots of espresso. If you don’t have an espresso machine, really strong brewed coffee will also work in this recipe. Brew the coffee while you’re heating the milk so you can combine the two ingredients immediately, while both are hot.
  • Milk: Whole milk will make your drink really creamy, but you can use a lower-fat milk or a non-dairy milk if you prefer.
  • Sugar: A tablespoon of granulated sugar will give you a fairly sweet latte. Use less sugar if you’re making a lighter version. You could also use simple syrup, agave, or honey.
  • Cinnamon: You’ll need ground cinnamon and plan on using a little extra for a garnish to make your latte look pretty and smell amazing.

How to Make A Cinnamon Dolce Latte

Combine. In a small saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, and cinnamon.

Heat milk mixture. Place the pan over low heat. Heat the milk until it’s warm but not boiling. It helps to whisk the mixture frequently so it heats evenly and the sugar dissolves. Heat the milk until small bubbles form around the edge of the pan, and then remove the pan from heat.

A Perfect Latte

The key to a creamy and delicious latte is a great espresso and heating your milk until it’s just bubbling around the edges, but not boiling. Follow these easy instructions to make your perfect latte right at home!

Add coffee or espresso. Pour the espresso into a cup or mug. Add the heated cinnamon milk to the cup.

Garnish and serve. If you’d like to really make it a coffee shop experience, top your cinnamon dolce latte with a spoonful of whipped cream or froth (see below), sprinkled with cinnamon. Serve immediately.

Easy Recipe Variations

  • Add froth. If you’d like to top your latte with a coffee shop-style froth, reserve ¼ cup of the heated milk. Use a frother or whisk vigorously to create the froth. Carefully pour the froth on the top of your latte.
  • Make an iced latte. If the weather is warm, you may enjoy an iced cinnamon dolce latte. Simply make the cinnamon milk ahead and chill it. Add ice to a cup, then pour in espresso and chilled cinnamon milk. Be sure to try my iced pumpkin spice latte, too.
  • Substitute cinnamon syrup. If you’d like to simplify this cinnamon dolce latte recipe, buy cinnamon syrup, such as Torani. Omit the sugar and cinnamon in the recipe, and stir cinnamon syrup into the milk to taste.
  • Add more spice. Cinnamon goes well with other ground spices, like nutmeg or allspice. Add a pinch of cayenne for a little extra warmth. Pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice can be used as a garnish for a little more dimension to your latte.
  • Try a latte bar. If you’re hosting friends, a latte bar is a great way to treat everyone to a delicious coffee beverage, made to order. You can set out a pot of espresso, an insulated container of hot milk, and flavored drink syrups and ground spices.

Serving Ideas

Try a cinnamon-flavored goodie to go along with your coffee. Snickerdoodle cookies or snickerdoodle bars are a natural choice with a cinnamon dolce latte because they are coated with cinnamon sugar. We love this easy-to-make cinnamon pull-apart bread (use canned rolls to make this treat) or yeasty homemade cinnamon swirl bread.
