Creamy, rich, tangy, and sweet, homemade yum yum sauce makes everything…well, a little bit more yum! This Japanese steakhouse sauce is a cinch to make at home.
½teaspoonhot sauce, such as Frank's RedHot(see note)
1tablespoonwater(adjust for desired consistency)
Instructions
In a bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, melted butter, garlic powder, paprika, sugar, and rice vinegar.
1 cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 1 tablespoon butter, melted, 2 teaspoons granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon rice vinegar, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon hot sauce, such as Frank's RedHot
Add water gradually until you reach the desired consistency. If you like a thinner sauce, use additional water.
1 tablespoon water
Taste the sauce. If you'd like it sweeter, add a little extra sugar; if you'd like it spicier, add another dash of hot sauce. If you think it could be tangier, add a bit more rice vinegar or a squeeze of lemon juice.
Let the sauce sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors develop.
Serve with grilled meat, shrimp, rice, or vegetables. Yum Yum sauce is perfect for meal bowls, stir fries, and as a sandwich spread, too. Try it on burgers or wraps.
Notes
Sugar: If you prefer to make a sauce that more closely mimics purchased Yum Yum sauce, increase the amount of sugar to taste.
Hot sauce: We found the hot sauce gave depth to the flavor of the sauce and made it taste more like store-bought. Using ½ teaspoon doesn’t add spicy heat, so we really recommend including it. Feel free to add more if you like.
Water: Purchased Yum Yum sauce has a thinner consistency than homemade. If you prefer, add more water until the sauce is the consistency you like.
Storage: Refrigerate yum yum sauce in a jar or airtight container for up to a week. Stir well before serving.
