Today’s “a day in the life” is Heather of Farmgirl Gourmet. Heather is another one of my best blogging buddies whom I’ve unfortunately never had the pleasure of meeting. You can always count on Heather to post delicious concoctions with beautiful photographs. Heather is so down-to-earth and I just know we’d be great friends if/when we meet in real life. Love ya, Heather!

Tell me about yourself and how you started food blogging.
I started Farmgirl Gourmet in October of 2006 as a way to keep family and friends up to date on what we were doing with our 120+ year old farm. In the beginning it was a lot of ramblings, and apologies for never postings. It wasn’t until October of 2010 that it became a major focus in my life and has taken off since then. Now I hope this rollercoaster ride never ends!
Take me through your day.
7:00 AM: Wake up and stand over the coffee maker until the little green light turns on, then I guzzle a cup before I can officially function.
7:30 AM: Quiz the kids about homework, lunches, whether they ate breakfast and kiss them goodbye for the rest of the day.
8:00 AM: Head to my office and check emails, Facebook, Twitter and Triberr.
9:00 AM: Eat breakfast with my husband.
9:30 AM: Go back to my office and check emails, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
12:00 PM: Eat lunch with my husband, usually that I cooked but sometimes it’s just a turkey sandwich.
1:00 PM – 3:00 PM: Either I head back to my office to get things done or I spend time in the kitchen working on recipe development projects or future blog post content.
3:20 PM: Kids start funneling through the door and we talk about their day while they eat me out of house and home, I mean get a snack.
5:00 PM: Take the son to karate, stop at the grocery store come home and make dinner.
6:30 PM: Eat dinner as a family.
7:30 PM: Finish cleaning up after dinner and make our way to the couch.
8:00-10:00 PM: Hold the couch down and watch whatever is on TV. Or, wait for the husband to fall asleep then steal the remote and turn on the Real Housewives of [insert whatever city is on Bravo].
10:00 PM: Go to bed and play solitaire on my phone until I get sleepy. Counterintuitive I know, but necessary.
What is your one must-have kitchen tool or gadget?
My Cuisinart Food Processor for sure. I make everything in that thing.
What is the most important part of your day? Why?
It’s the kisses goodbye to the kids and the kiss good morning from my husband. We are a lovey bunch.
What is your favorite part of your day? Why?
Dinner. We have a routine of going around the table and asking what positive thing happened that day.
What is your LEAST favorite part of the day? Why?
The morning…when the alarm goes off. I’m not a morning person.
If you could choose one room in your house to spend the WHOLE day in, which room would it be? Why?
My living room. I love it in there. The southern sunlight beams in through giant old windows and it’s just a perfectly cozy space. Second best place would be my kitchen. I know you didn’t ask that, but as a food blogger…I’d better say that, right?
If you could choose one room in your house to remodel (on an unlimited budget!) which room would it be and why?
The kitchen for sure. I recently got all new appliances, but everything is a bit dated. Just before getting the appliances my husband agreed to let me “put lipstick on the pig” so to speak and I repainted the old funky cabinets and added new hardware. For the time being, it looks alright, but it’s far from my dream kitchen for sure.
What is your favorite day of the week? Why?
Sunday. We always have my Dad over for dinner on Sunday and it’s my day to make something spectacular.
If you had to choose one place to travel to every year over and over, where would it be? Why? Have you been there before?
Maui. My grandparents lived in Kihei for many years when I was growing up so I have a great love of that little town. We also got married just outside of Kihei so that adds even more love and devotion. If I could move there, I would in a second.
If you could travel anywhere in the world for free, where would you go and how long would you stay?
Italy. Forever. The end.
What is your favorite quote or verse?
Only Dead Fish Go With The Flow.
What recipe on your blog are you most proud of?
What recipe on your blog do your readers seem to love most?
Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte – so much that I’ve blogged it twice!
What have you learned since you began blogging?
That I have no self control. That I allow my hunger to drive my blogging topics. That I hate my scale. That I have made the most amazing friends that I may never meet in person, but know that if I needed anything they would be there to help me out.
What have you found to be the most challenging part of blogging?
Coming up with new and interesting food to share. Sometimes I get writers block and it can be like falling off the bike and being afraid to get back on. But, I always do because I absolutely love what I do.
Do you have any advice for someone who is interested in cooking or food blogging?
Don’t be afraid. Just do it. It’s a fun ride and if you stay true to you, great things will come.
Who would you like to see featured here in the future?
Sommer from A Spicy Perspective
Is there anything else you would like to tell the world about yourself?
There are so many things I could tell the world, but I think I’ve managed to bore them enough.

I just found your site through Katrina’s Kitchen. I had to giggle when I saw you are due today. Me too! However it does not seem like my little one is in a hurry to get out. I hope you have your little one soon and feel better. It sounds like you’ve had a tough pregnancy.

Dying over those living room windows!!
Heather | Farmgirl Gourmet says
The windows are the best part of owning a 1oo year old house, well next to the mouldings. :) Oh and character. Ok, I just love old houses.
brandi says
i love these :) especially getting to see everyone’s kitchens! it’s fun to see where they “work”
Heather | Farmgirl Gourmet says
Thanks Brandi. It was a ton of fun to do, even if it took me several months to get it back to Rach. ;) Good thing she loves me.
Liz @ The Lemon Bowl says
Oh my gosh – I love everything about Heather’s “Day in the Life”. Especially the line about putting lipstick on a pig. :) xo
Heather | Farmgirl Gourmet says
Ha Liz! I love the “lipstick on the pig” line. We’ve used up a whole lot of lipstick on this house. :)
