Today’s “a day in the life” is Alaina of Fabtastic Eats. I am so excited to introduce you all to Alaina. I started to really get to know her when we both pregnant with our baby boys. We ended up having them a mere two days apart and Alaina has grown to be one of my closest blogging buddies as our little men quickly (oh so quickly) grew during their first year. Now we’re both planning Winter ONEderland birthday parties (total coincidence that we both chose the same theme) and crying into our Starbucks coffee, praying that we can find a way to freeze time.

I hope you all love Alaina as much as I do! Make sure to stop by her site and check out her amazing food and gorgeous photography. Tell her I sent you!

Tell me about yourself and how you started food blogging.

I was born and raised in New England, and am currently living in Missouri, we move to Washington at the beginning of next year! I’m ecstatic to be trying out the west coast! I’m an army wife and mom to two beautiful little boys. I live and breathe my family and food!

I started my food blog when I pregnant, back then it had a different name. I knew we had a little baby on the way, and going out to dinner every night wasn’t going to be an option anymore! So I started teaching myself how to cook! Fast forward to last year, I changed the name of my blog and started taking it more seriously. Now it’s my passion, and I love it so, so much!

What does a typical day look like for you?

My routine changes daily, it’s so erratic. On the weekends I do nothing but spend time with my husband and kids doing whatever we want…but here’s what my day to day is during the week..

6:30am-Wake up! My kids are up at 6:30 on the dot every day, which also happens to be when my husband is walking in the door from P.T. We play around in bed for a few minutes and then get up!

6:45-Make a latte, change diapers (yippee!), make my kids breakfast.

7:00-7:30-Hop on the computer, and write the days post. Publish it, promote it on social media while simultaneously talking to my husband and playing with my kids. If I don’t have a post up for that day, I read through and comment of other blogs if possible.

7:30-9:00-Sometimes we bring my husband to work, if so we’re back by 8am, if not I just hang out with my kids, plan what I’m going to make that day, make lists of what I need to pick up at the store, answer emails, comment on a few other blogs if I can.

9:00-11:00- My eleven month old usually goes down for his first nap for about 1 ½-2 hours. I take the time to work out, (JM 30 Day Shred is my favorite currently!) and read books with my 2 ½ year old. Then I make and photograph whatever recipe I’ve decided on for that day.

11:00-12:00- My hubs generally pops in for lunch, and to bring the car for us if we didn’t bring him to work that morning. We hang out with him, I shower, we talk, play, eat, etc.

12:00-3:00-We drop him off at work, run any errands, commissary, px, library, etc., go to lunch sometimes or to the playground for an hour or two.

3:00-4:30-My youngest goes back down for a second nap, sometimes my oldest joins him in which case I get as much done on the computer as possible, write the next day’s post, emails, edit photos, make a to-do list for the next day. Sometimes my husband gets out a little early, and I use that time to go to the gym and get a run in.

4:30-5:30- Hang out with my kiddos, play on the floor, dinner prep.

5:30-6:30- Make and eat dinner as a family if my husband’s home.

6:30-7:00- Baths for my kids and then they’re in bed no later than 7:15.

7:00-10:00- Hang out with my husband, get on the computer for a bit, edit, write, whatever it is that needs to be done. We watch our shows or he works and I read. I’m usually in bed no later than 10:30.

What is your one must-have kitchen tool or gadget?

I love a good sharp knife and a powerful blender. With those two things, I can do anything! Also, I’m obsessed with wooden spoons. I stayed at my moms, she didn’t have any, so I went out and bought a set for her. Drives me crazy not having them! (I guess that’s a lot more than one must-have! Oops!)

What is the most important part of your day? Why?

My mornings! Everyone is happy and refreshed, it’s the start of a new day, I get the chance to see my husband for an hour and we can spend time with our kids. I plan out my day and get a workout in..most days! ;)

What is your favorite part of your day? Why?

When my husband gets home!! He leaves every morning at 4:30 for PT, comes back for an hour for breakfast, then is gone for around 10 hours. Since we recently moved to MO temporarily, there isn’t anyone or anything here, those days are looong. I spend a lot of time just keeping our munckins entertained! So it’s really nice when he gets home, and we all get to eat dinner together.

What is your LEAST favorite part of the day? Why?

I’m not sure I really have a least favorite, but probably the middle of the afternoon when my kids start getting the cranks, and need a change of scenery stat!

If you could choose one room in your house to spend the WHOLE day in, which room would it be? Why?

Let’s talk ideally, since we’re staying somewhere temporarily. An open kitchen/living room area! We love to entertain and everyone always congregates in the kitchen. Can I say it drives me crazy to have a lot of people in the kitchen while I’m trying to cook? So with an open area, I can still talk, socialize and entertain while people are in the living room! Plus it’s a lot easier to keep an eye on my kids while I’m working during the day!

What is your favorite day of the week? Why?

Saturdays! A day when nothing else is going on except for what we want to do. My husbands around all day, we can relax or take the kids out, but no matter what we’re all together. Plus, since my husband’s home, I usually get coffee in bed, yippee!

If you had to choose one place to travel to every year, where would it be? Why? Have you been there before?

Oh man! The options! This World is so beautiful, I’m not sure I could choose just go to the same place every year! I’d love to travel a lot more, and once our kids are older we have every intention of doing so…there is so much to see! But to answer your question, I suppose since we no longer live near our families, we would go home every year to see everyone.

If you could travel anywhere in the world for free, where would you go and how long would you stay?

At this moment in time, I’m dying to go to Italy. I want to see both the North and the South. There is so much history there and so much to see, I think we would have to be there at least two weeks to really experience it all!

What is your favorite quote or verse?

“Everything happens for a reason.” I know that’s so common, but I truly believe that. I say it all the time, and say it to myself, it helps get me through things, and helps remind me that there is a greater cause or reason for whatever is happening at that moment.

What is your favorite cookbook?

I’m honestly not sure I have a favorite! I know that’s awful, but with the internet these days, there are so many incredible resources and recipes right at my fingertips!

What recipe on your blog are you most proud of?

My Double Chocolate Raspberry Shortbread Bars

They were a dessert I came up with completely on my own, and they turned out better than I ever could have expected. Every time I’ve made them, they were a huge hit. And while the photos aren’t the best, don’t let it distract you from how incredible these bars really are!

What recipe on your blog do your readers seem to love most?

Seriously, this one kind of shocked me a little! Ha! But my Apple Cider Margaritas!

What is your guilty food pleasure that you’re embarrassed to fess up to? Kraft Mac & Cheese? Spagetti-o’s? Canned cheese? We promise not to judge!

Corn Dogs! I really, really love corn go to fairs, JUST for them. When I was pregnant, I ate an embarrassing amount of them. It’s ridiculous.

What have you learned since you began blogging?

A lot. Photography. Not just of food, but the pictures I can take of my kids now are priceless. Networking, and self-promotion, though an adjustment and feels strange at first, is essential. Plus I’ve learned that I’m totally in love with food. And eating. Like completely.

What have you found to be the most challenging part of blogging?

Time Management! There are not enough hours in the day, not even close! Not just for the recipe creating and cooking, but for the social media and business side of it. It takes a lot of time to learn it all, and the learning is never over. That part is very challenging for me too. As well as stepping away from it all to be WITH my family.

Do you have any advice for someone who is interested in cooking or food blogging?

You better absolutely love it, because it’s a lot of work! But so worth it! And try so hard not to compare yourself to other bloggers because everyone’s at a different level and it does no good for you! And at the end of the day, getting comments or emails from people telling you they’ve tried your recipe and they loved it, is sooo rewarding!

Sigh. Time management, girl. Amen.
