Today’s “a day in the life”  is Meagan of A Zesty Bite.  I’ve known Meagan for awhile now and I’m so happy to be featuring her here! She’s the sweetest and is so good at commenting on other bloggers’ posts. And let me tell you — it’s hard to find time to do that with everything else, especially with a kid in the picture. Tell me about yourself and how you started food blogging.

I have always had a LOVE and PASSION for food.  I would create a sandwich shop in our kitchen when I was little with gourmet sandwiches (or so I thought).  After college and a short stint living in London I settled in Houston, TX working for an energy company.  I was reading about 5 food blogs on a daily basis and decided on my birthday to start my own.  I originally created it for family and friends to see what I was eating and showing the recipe.  My photos were AWFUL back then because I was taking them with a point and shoot camera with FLASH lighting.

7:00 AM I make myself get out of bed.  I immediately get my laptop (with coffee in hand) and start checking my publish posts and I take to twitter.  I try to get a couple of social media shoutouts before Olivia wakes up.  Olivia is our 15 month old little girl.

8:00 AM Olivia usually wakes up and I get her breakfast and bottle ready.  We sit at the table and watch Disney while I finish up tweets.

8:30 – 11:00 This is Olivia’s time to play around the house or go to gym class.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays she attend PDO (parents day out) for a couple of hours so that I can complete recipes.

11:30 Lunch is served for Livi and then I put her down for a nap

12 – 2ish:  I plan out recipes, take photos, edit, send emails and comment on blogs.  This is my time to get things done while baby is sleeping.

2-5: More Olivia play time!

5-6:30pm I will try my hardest to get dinner together without Olivia begging to play in the food.  She wants to see EVERYTHING that I do and doesn’t like when she can’t sample the food.  After dinner is done we typically sit down and eat a little after 6.

7-8:30 More play time with Olivia except Shaun (my husband is home to play with her)  I will either edit photos, play with her, give her bath or answer more emails during this time.

8:30 – 10pm Watch TV and write the next days post.

Tuesdays and Thursdays while Olivia is at PDO I usually go to grocery store or run errands.  I get most recipes and photos done on those days because I don’t have sticky little fingers in the food.

What is your one must-have kitchen tool or gadget?

I really need good knives with cutting boards.  I go through about 2-3 cutting boards a day.  The best knives I have found that we really like are the Chicago Cutlery brand.

What is the most important part of your day? Why?

I absolutely love spending the day playing with Olivia and watching her grow up.  She is constantly changing habits and her personality is so strong.

What is your favorite part of your day? Why?

If I’m not playing with Olivia I like to be in the kitchen brainstorming recipes.  I usually see what we have in the refrigerator or pantry before coming up with ideas.

What is your LEAST favorite part of the day? Why?

After I make lunch and dinner there are usually a ton of dirty dishes.  I loathe washing dishes and I probably do them at least 2-3 times a day.

If you could choose one room in your house to spend the WHOLE day in, which room would it be? Why?

I would spend time in my kitchen.  The kitchen is the place where food is made and families come together for quality time.  We have a No cell phone rule at our table and NO tv.  We focus on communicating with each other and no letting other things become a distraction during dinner.

If you could choose one room in your house to remodel (on an unlimited budget!) which room would it be and why? 

Haha it would be my kitchen.  We moved from Houston to Lubbock this past year and my cabinet space is not as big as the old house.  I need more space and room.




What is your favorite day of the week? Why?

I love Saturdays!  I’m happy that the week is over and I know that I have one more day left before the week starts.

If you had to choose one place to travel to every year, where would it be? Why? Have you been there before?

I would choose Italy.  I’ve been there twice now sans Olivia.  I would go for a couple of weeks as a family to travel the towns and munch on the delicious food.  I also can’t forget the divine wine!

If you could travel anywhere in the world for free, where would you go and how long would you stay?

I’ve always wanted to go to Tahiti!  From pictures its absolutely gorgeous with the huts on the water.  I would stay for about 2 weeks before I started to miss family and friends.

What is your favorite quote or verse?

Matthew 7:7-8: Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

What is your favorite cookbook?

Oh man this is a tough one.  I am a hoarder when it comes to cookbooks.  My absolutely favorites are my Grandmother’s cookbooks.  She was able to write 3 in her lifetime.

What recipe on your blog are you most proud of?

Man this is the hardest question to ask a blogger.  This would probably change daily but today I am going with Chile Relleno Rustico.  All the ingredients in this recipe just work so well together.


What recipe on your blog do your readers seem to love most?

Apple Pie Moonshine is the most popular.

What is your guilty food pleasure that you’re embarrassed to fess up to? Kraft Mac & Cheese? Spagetti-o’s? Canned cheese? We promise not to judge!

I’m a sucker for anything Mexican food related or hot homemade bread.  My guilty pleasures would be chips and queso, any type of homemade bread with butter slathered on it and steak.  My ultimate meal would be steak, potatoes and a roll.  No dessert because I would rather take another roll.

What have you learned since you began blogging?

I would never have thought I would become fast friends with bloggers.  We all have this love for blogging and food.

What have you found to be the most challenging part of blogging?

I see blogging as a FULL-time job.  We are either on social media, creating recipe, taking photos, editing photos and answewing emails.  Since I have gone full time blogging I find it more difficult to actually blog while watching Olivia.  My management of time is getting better but I’m constantly having to work with it.

Do you have any advice for someone who is interested in cooking or food blogging?

Everyone is going to say be yourself.  My advice is to ask questions and befriend other food bloggers.  You will get the best advice from other bloggers.  Have fun with blogging or you will burn out fast.
