Shall I bombard you with links to prove my love? Nah–partly because I’ve been there, done that, and partly because I’m feeling a little lazy. If you want to see the extent of my love affair with vanilla beans, all you would have to do is a quick search on my site for vanilla beans. It’s kind of ridiculous, really.

I’m seizing the goodness of apple season (did you see my round-up with over 100 apple recipes?) and making homemade applesauce. It’s pretty much one of my favorite things, ever. Along with vanilla beans.

(don’t worry, popcorn, you’re still my one true love.)

This applesauce is great because there is no added sugar. I used sweet Macintosh apples (one of my favorite varieties) which are super sweet. They also cook down quickly which is an added bonus if you’re in a hurry. The vanilla beans also give this applesauce a very sweet flavor. The pears just mix things up and keep things interesting.

One thing that is important when you’re making homemade pear applesauce is a good sturdy pan or pot. This way you can do all the stirring you need without worrying about the pan sliding around on the burner. The last thing you want is hot applesauce all over your toes! The Pampered Chef sent me one of their great new products, the Rockcrok™ Dutch Oven. This Dutch Oven can take some serious heat! It has a 4 quart capacity — enough for soups or roasts and is heat resistant to 752 degrees Fahrenheit. Uhh yeah…is that hot enough for you?

And get this: It’s dishwasher safe.

Ahhh! Best. Thing. Ever.

To be honest though, one of my favorite features is the glass lid. I love being able to see what is going on without lifting the lid. I’m nosy! I need to know what is going on at all times.

Vanilla Bean Pear Homemade Applesauce

This vanilla bean pear homemade applesauce isn’t your standard applesauce but instead boasts the sophisticated flavors of vanilla beans and pears

Ingredients:

  • 2 large pears (I used Red D’Anjou)
  • 6 large, sweet apples (I used Macintosh)
  • 1 vanilla bean split lengthwise
  • 1 cup water

Directions:

  1. Peel, core and cut apples and pears into large chunks. Add pears, apples, split vanilla bean and water to a large, heavy bottomed saucepan or Dutch oven.
  2. Bring to a boil and reduce to a rapid simmer and cook, partially covered, 20-30 minutes or until apples and pears are softened. Stir frequently. Add more water if necessary for desired consistency.
  3. Remove vanilla bean pod prior to serving. Serve warm or store in refrigerator for up to one week.

  43. So basic, but I could really use some microwave safe mixing bowl! Mine are metal, and I’m scared to try to melt chocolate in them (since I find myself needing chocolate sauce, oh, 24-7).     I love the apples and pears and vanilla. I’m the same way about vanilla beans. I like to know where they’re from and how soft and plump they are and I’ll admit to hoarding them.
