The Bright Side of Life

“The Bright Side of Life”

When thinking on that topic, my mind immediately goes to my children.

I mean, I know I’m biased, but how can that face not brighten your day?

Or how about these big brown eyes that in certain lights look brown-blue-green?

Through all the hard parts of parenting (and wow, is it hard sometimes), these two are such bright spots in my life.

Really, this post is hard for me to write because I have so much good in my life. I am so truly blessed and humbled by what God has given me.

From the big things:

a roof over my head

food to eat

To the smaller things:

A husband who doesn’t blink an eye when I say I’m too tired to cook — he’s already on the way out to get carry out

my son’s dimples

my daughter’s curls

cell phones and internet to keep in touch with family who are far away

popcorn (yeah, had to add that)

and so much more.

You could say life is good. And I’m not trying to be overly sappy and paint a picture like my life is perfect, but lately I’ve been trying to focus on those things which make life brighter. Because what is the point of dwelling on dirty diapers, unfair remarks, toddler tantrums, rainy days, stretch marks and sick days? I try to look for the good in each of those.

Dirty diapers? An adorable 6-month-old.

Unfair remarks? A (fairly) successful food blog that I’ve worked my tail off to achieve.

Toddler tantrums? Should we talk about those darling curls again? And she gives the absolute best hugs.

Rainy days? A sunny one is right around the corner. I live in Michigan, after all.

Stretch marks and 540 days (give or take) of throwing up? Well, I just happen to have the most precious children in the world because of those things.

Now, let’s talk about these frozen fruit bars for a second. They are so good! I tried the Strawberry and Milk flavor and my whole family loved them. E is completely smitten, as you can tell by the photos. They taste like a strawberry milkshake in fruit bar form. They are called Fruttare bars and they come in a lot of great flavors (that I cannot wait to try). Their other flavors include: Peach & Milk, Coconut & Milk, Banana & Milk, Mango, Strawberry, Lime, and Orange. I think Peach & Milk and Mango are next on my list to try. The Fruit and Milk Bars are made with creamy milk and real fruit, and the Fruit and Juice Bars are made with real fruit and refreshing juice. Honestly, I’m going to be trying them all.

My husband eats cereal almost every night as a bedtime snack and he said he wants to switch and start eating these! I was blown away. That may not sound like a big deal, but it’s huge!

I’d love to know — Have you had something not-so-great happen to you lately and were you able to see the bright side? PS: It’s never too late.

  9. Cutest kids EVER! Great post Rachel :)

  10. I love this post, such a great reminder to think of all the little things that add up to great things. And those faces, they have got to make you smile every day!

  11. These look really good… I’ll have to find some and see if my overly picky child will eat them. How the heck do you get E to look at the camera? W refuses. Looks the other way, huge grin, and says, “cheese.” She KNOWS what she’s doing too. Toddlers!!!!!
On the other stuff… I feel like my parents when I say, “being a parent is the hardest, most rewarding job, EVER!” But it’s just true. Somedays I want to snuggle their sweet souls. Other days I want to throw their overly opinionated butts out the front door.

    • Oh my goodness, E LOVES posing for the camera. It’s kind of scary, really. I think it’s mostly because she likes to look at the photos on the camera afterwards.

And yes — hardest, most rewarding is totally accurate. Phew! Especially this toddler stage. So exhausting!
