Today’s “a day in the life” is Cassie of Bake Your Day. I really cannot say enough good things about Cassie. If we lived closer, I just know we would hang out all the time.  Cassie is a super talented blogger but remains grounded, sweet, and focused on the things that really matter. That’s not always the easiest thing to do.

Tell me about yourself and how you started food blogging.

I have just recently moved to Mid-Missouri with my husband who is in full time ministry (youth & music).  We moved here from Kansas City where we met and started our lives together.  Paul proposed to me in a boat that he made and we got married in May 2011 at the Lake of the Ozarks.  It’s been a wild ride and I can only imagine what will be around the next corner for us.

I’ve always loved food.  I grew up in the Mid-West and food has always been a big part of my life.  I have always loved to cook and bake and somehow discovered food blogs, started following them and finally had an idea to start one of my own.  The thing that kept me from starting one was that I couldn’t come up with a name that I liked.  Bake Your Day came about out of my husband’s creativity and I loved the play on words.  It started on snowy day in Kansas City when we were snowed in – I made a big pot of homemade chicken & noodles, photographed (horribly!) and pushed publish and I have never looked back.

Take me through your day. cassie headshot

Here’s the truth: I have no daily routine at this point.  We just moved to a new town in which I have no job so for now,  the above is what my days will look like…until I find a job and then who really knows.  I’ll just pretend that my life will be so organized and scheduled.  I’m also throwing in some exploring of our new city, FaceTiming with friends and family, unpacking boxes, and decorating.

What is your one must-have kitchen tool or gadget?

There are so many that I really can’t live without but the one that I use most-often that is a definite must-have is a good sharp chef’s knife.  My in-laws bought me an awesome set of Chicago Cutlery after I fell in love with theirs and I adore these knives!

What is the most important part of your day? Why?

The morning – my “me time” that I spend with my coffee, in Scripture, in prayer and (sometimes) working out.  I’m very routine and if this part of the routine is skipped, my whole day is off.

What is your favorite part of your day? Why?

See above: most important time = my favorite time too.

What is your LEAST favorite part of the day? Why?

Is it bad to say showering?  I don’t mind being clean – hear me out!  I just really dislike taking the time to do it and blow-drying my hair is a pain.

If you could choose one room in your house to spend the WHOLE day in, which room would it be? Why?

Well, as a write this, I am still living in Kansas City.  But by the time you read it, I’ll be living in a completely new home.  In fact, Paul and I just signed a contract to purchase a new house in our new town today.  If this is the house that we get, I can’t wait to spend time in the family room – it has beautiful hardwoods, tons of windows with great light and a fireplace!

If you could choose one room in your house to remodel (on an unlimited budget!) which room would it be and why?

In the new house, it will be the kitchen.  There is nothing hugely wrong with it but I will eventually want some updates and I would love to be able to open it up a little more to the rest of the house.

What is your favorite day of the week? Why?

I think Saturdays are my favorite.  I like waking up slowly, having breakfast with Paul, doing random projects around the house and exploring our new city.

What is your favorite quote or verse?

I have so many favorites and they change daily.  I’ve been focusing on this one lately from Ephesians 3:20: Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.

What is your favorite cookbook?

Cook’s Illustrated New Best Recipes is my favorite.  I’m absolutely horrible at following recipes but this is the one that I go to mostly.  I love learning why they chose certain techniques and ingredients. I learn so much from it.

What recipe on your blog are you most proud of?

This is such a hard question to answer! I think I still have to say my Perfected Black Bean Burgers are the answer.  I worked so hard on this recipe and these are a nearly-weekly occurrence on our menu.  I was truly proud of so many recipes in 2012, though.

What recipe on your blog do your readers seem to love most?

buffalo chicken soup is the favorite…and one of mine too!

What is your guilty food pleasure that you’re embarrassed to fess up to? I can’t choose between these two: French Fries and Cheese dip (Mexican restaurant-style).

What have you learned since you began blogging?

I have learned so much. I think I have discovered my creative side and I have discovered something that I am truly and inexplicably in love with and I’m lucky enough to make an income from it.  I love the community, the creativity, the challenges and the opportunities.  And, I love the eating.
