Today’s “a day in the life” is Jamie of Thrifty Veggie Mama.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Jamie at my Taste of Michigan event, and she is just as sweet in real life as she is online. She’s extremely genuine and kind. I’ve been following her blog for quite a long time now and it is so fun to see the progression of things. We started blogging around the same time, so we’ve been learning together!

Tell me about yourself and how you started food blogging.

I started my food blog almost 2 years ago.  Just prior to that, while pregnant with my 3rd baby, I quit my job as a physical therapist to stay home with my kids.  My family was newly vegetarian and I felt that there weren’t a lot of blogs out there with simple and affordable vegetarian recipes that a family would eat.  I also began the blog as a way to have something for myself.  I think when we become mothers, especially if we don’t have a job outside the home, we tend to forgot ourselves as individuals.  We become wrapped up in being a wife, homemaker, and mom that we lose a bit of our self identity.  My blog has become a way for me to maintain some of that.

Take me through your day.

I wish I had a better schedule.  This is one thing I have struggled with since becoming a blogger/stay at home mom.  As a physical therapist I had a very set schedule.  That doesn’t happen in a house with 3 kids (ages 6, 3 ½, and 18 months) and a hubby!

6:00-6:30 (Really trying to make this more like 5:00 -5:30 so I can get a workout and Bible time in) Get up, pack lunch for L and hubby, get L up and fed and dressed.  Get L and hubby off for school and work before 7:30.  Usually Little Man is up around 6:30 so he is eating breakfast during this time.  He eats a lot so he is eating almost this entire time!

7:30-8:30 Most of the time G is up by now and I get her breakfast. After breakfast she will watch a couple Disney Jr shows while I work on a blog post, check in with FB and email.  Read a few blogs. Oh, and eat my breakfast.  Little Man is usually wandering around wreaking havoc.

8:30-11:30  During this time I am cleaning, doing laundry, playing with the kids, occasionally checking email, FB,and Twitter.  Sometimes I will do a Jillian Michaels DVD during this time.  1 day of the week the kids and I go out and get groceries and on Wed we usually go to story time at the Library.

11:30-12:30 Lunch, clean up from lunch, get the kids down for nap.  If I’m lucky G will nap.  If not she plays quietly (somewhat!) for an hour or 2.

12:30-2:30  Blog time.  Writing posts, reading blogs, FB, Twitter, etc.  If I didn’t workout earlier in the day I sometimes get on the treadmill during this time.

2:30-2:50 Kids up from nap and get them ready to pick up L from school.

2:50-4:00 Pick up L from school (it’s 20 minutes away).  Get them a snack after we get home.

4:00-5:00 Playtime with kids, finishing up laundry

5:00-7:00 Dinner prep, eating dinner, and clean-up.  Hubby plays with kiddos.

7:00-8:00 Little Man goes down for bed around 7 or 7:30.  The girls around 8.

8:00-10ish Quiet time at last!  I work on blog stuff usually while sitting on the couch while hubby watches TV.  Sometimes we will watch a show we have on DVR.  The only shows we really watch are Amazing Race, Top Chef, Downton Abbey, and Mad Men.  Once in awhile we will watch a movie.  I head to bed around 10 and try to read a little before falling asleep.  And if I’m lucky I will get a full night of uninterrupted sleep!

What is your one must-have kitchen tool or gadget?

My Blendtec that I won from Two Peas and Their Pod.  I absolutely love it!

What is the most important part of your day?

The morning.  If I don’t get off to a good start with some devotional time and plan my day it throws my whole day off.

What is your favorite part of your day? Why?

When I relax into bed at night.  It’s so warm and cozy and I like to sleep!

What is your LEAST favorite part of the day? Why?

Getting up in the morning.  I don’t like leaving my warm cozy bed.

If you could choose one room in your house to remodel (on an unlimited budget!) which room would it be and why?

It’s not really one room but I would have to say our basement.  It’s unfinished right now and I can’t wait to get a nice workout area, guest room, and play room down there!

What is your favorite day of the week? Why?

Saturday. Saturday is the Sabbath for us so it’s a day we reconnect with God and our families.  We go to church, spend time together as a family, and don’t work.

If you could travel anywhere in the world for free, where would you go and how long would you stay?

There are so many places I want to travel to.  New Zealand, Italy, Bali, the list goes on and on.   I would just take a year and travel all over.

What is your favorite quote or verse?

“For I know the plans I have for you,”declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

What is your favorite cookbook?

I really like How to Cook Everything Vegetarian by Mark Bittman

What recipe on your blog are you most proud of?

Probably Pumpkin Apple Muffins.  It was my first photo that was accepted by Foodgawker.  Ant they taste pretty good too..

What recipe on your blog do your readers seem to love most?

My most viewed post is Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie.  This recipe is vegan, and refined sugar free.  I’m pretty proud of that one too though it’s one of my earlier ones so I am not crazy about the picture!)

What have you learned since you began blogging?

I have learned so much!  I had no interest in photography prior to blogging so I have learned a ton in that area.  My first blog photos were so bad!  I’ve also grown as a cook. I feel I am now better at looking at ingredients and making something out of them rather than following a recipe.

What have you found to be the most challenging part of blogging?

Balancing everything. Not comparing yourself to others. Staying true to yourself. Consistently finding things to blog about.

Do you have any advice for someone who is interested in cooking or food blogging?

Blogging is way more work than I ever imagined.  But it is fun and it is addicting!  Do it because you like it and want to share what you know (or don’t know!) with others.  As for cooking, just get in the kitchen and start cooking!

Who would you like to see featured here in the future?

Jen Peas and Crayons
Jenna Eat, Live, Run
Gina Running to the Kitchen

Is there anything else you would like to tell the world about yourself?

I can’t whistle and I am horribly afraid of lizards!

Thanks Jamie! I loved learning more about you.

It is so crazy how much we have in common, physical therapy, some of the things in our schedules, when we started our blogs, the list could go on and on! Jeremiah 29:11 is one of my favorite verses too!
