{a day in the life} Yummy Mummy

Did you all miss “a day in the life” during the pancake party? I did! We’re back this month and today we have Marina from Yummy Mummy here with us.

Marina has an insanely gorgeous blog that is a must see. She has a beautiful family and features beautiful food. Don’t miss it!

Tell me about yourself and how you started food blogging.

Hello! My name is Marina and I’m a wife and stay-at-home mommy with two little girls, ages 2 and 4. I have always loved cooking. I grew up cooking with my family and friends. In college I took cooking classes in Italy where I was studying for a semester and fell in love with cooking even more. I just loved picking up the freshly picked produce from the outdoor markets, fresh pasta, and coming home and making a big pot of tomato sauce while I sipped red wine. I studied education and art in college and went on to teach for a few years before having kids. After my first little girl was born I created Yummy Mummy as a place to document my favorite recipes and as a creative outlet during naptime. Another thing I really developed a love for during my time in Italy is photography, and the blog is a place where I get to enjoy that as well. I recently wrote and photographed my first cookbook, which will have 100+ mostly meatless recipes and stories from my life. The book with come out around Mother’s Day 2013.

Take me through your day.

7 AM: Wake up. I LOVE when I wake up and can have a cup of coffee before the girls wake up but usually they wake me up first.

7:15 get the girls snuggled up on the couch to watch one of their favorite shows while I make breakfast. They usually have oatmeal with berries, homemade granola, or eggs. The girls eat and I help them get dressed for the day.

8:15 We let our chickens out of the coop to roam around. They love to come flying out and peck around the yard for bugs and flowers.

8:30 some days I drop my 4 year old off at preschool and other days we go to the gym, the park, the zoo, etc. for the morning.

12:00 I make lunch for the girls and we eat, or I head to preschool to pick up my daughter.

1:30-3:30 naptime or quiet time for the girls. This is my only window of opportunity to get things done. I do dinner prep, make any phone calls, and work on the blog. For the past couple of months this slot of time is when I would cook and do the photography for my cookbook.

4:00 the girls and I run any errands, play at home, or meet friends for play dates.

5:30 I start dinner. I put on some music and the girls and I dance around while we get dinner ready.

6:00 We eat dinner. Our girls are still little and have early bedtimes so we eat early.

7:00 the girls play with Daddy, get in the bath, and get ready for bed.

8:00 lots of stories and snuggles and the girls get to bed. This can be a struggle with the girls wanting to play!

8:30 I clean up, take a shower, watch TV with hubby, and work (play) on the computer. I get REALLY sucked into Pinterest and somehow hours suddenly disappear and it’s time for bed.

9:00 I always – always – have a cup of herbal tea. I love Yogi Tea.

10:30 nighty night!

What is your one must-have kitchen tool or gadget?

That’s a hard one because I have a LOT of kitchen tools I love. I would say my #1 though is a tie between my KitchenAid mixer and my food processor. Both have permanent spots on my counter because I use them so often. The food processor is such a time saver for chopping, making pesto, and combining things like pie crust.

What is your favorite part of your day? Why?

Cooking dinner with my girls. It’s a relaxing and fun part of the day where we’re getting settled and comfortable at home for the evening. I love when the house starts smelling like yummy things.

What is your LEAST favorite part of the day? Why?

Any tantrums that happen. With 2 and 4 year olds they just happen sometimes and they are not fun.

If you could choose one room in your house to remodel (on an unlimited budget!) which room would it be and why?

Kitchen!!!! My kitchen is actually quite nice already, but I have always wanted a kitchen that was open to the living room and I hate that I can’t be with the kids if they are in the living/playroom and I’m in the kitchen cooking or doing dishes. My dream is to tear out the wall dividing the kitchen and living room, replace the tile countertops with white marble, and have a pizza oven.

Check out all my favorite kitchens I’ve pinned for inspiration here: http://pinterest.com/mdelio/dream-kitchen/ Yes there are over 70 kitchen pictures. You will swoon, I promise.

What is your favorite day of the week? Why?

Friday. We get together with our mommy/kiddie friends for “mommy happy hour” and then my hubby is home for the weekend. It’s a great day!

If you had to choose one place to travel to every year over and over, where would it be? Why? Have you been there before?

Hawaii. Hawaii is just so relaxing. I love the floral scent in the air, the warm water, the tropical drinks, I could just go on and on. I have been several times and it’s an easy place to travel with kids.

If you could travel anywhere in the world for free, where would you go and how long would you stay?

I would go back to Italy (Tuscany) for a year. I would love for my girls to be immersed in the Italian culture and learn a second language. I would totally eat gelato every day too.

What recipe on your blog do your readers seem to love most?

My most popular recipes have been:

Superfoods Detox Salad

Sparkling Cranberry Brie Bites

What have you found to be the most challenging part of blogging?

Time. There are so many fantastic blogs that I read, but I just don’t have the time to comment and visit with all my blogger friends often enough.
