Tuna Pizza is a Budget Meal
Are you looking for more budget-friendly meals? Who isn’t, right? Creating a delicious meal doesn’t have to break the bank.
You’ll want to give this tuna pizza a try! Take your tuna salad outside the sandwich with budget-friendly tuna pizza.
- Canned tuna is fairly inexpensive especially if you don’t splurge on solid white tuna. Watch the sales and stock up when it’s on sale. Canned tuna keeps forever so it’s a good item to stockpile.
- Make homemade pizza dough. If you make your own pizza dough, this meal is really inexpensive. Buying pre-made dough could cost you a few dollars but making your own will likely come in under a dollar.
- Shred your own cheese. Another money saving tip is to shred your own cheese. I love the convenience of shredded cheese and have more than a few bags in my fridge but block cheese is less expensive and actually melts better because it doesn’t have the anti-clumping additives that pre-shredded cheese does.
How To Make Tuna Pizza
Pre-bake the crust. I like to grease the pan with olive oil and sprinkle it with cornmeal for an extra crispy crust.
Make the topping. Mix together drained tuna, mayonnaise, shredded cheese, finely diced celery, and sliced green onions.
Top the pizza. Spread the topping evenly over the pre-baked crust. Top with more shredded cheese and a thinly sliced green pepper. You could substitute red pepper, if you prefer.
Bake the pizza until the crust is golden brown and crisp, and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Let it cool a few minutes before slicing it.

Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 tablespoons cornmeal
- 1 ball pizza dough, thawed if frozen
- 2 cans (5 oz. each) tuna, packed in water
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided (mozzarella or Monterey Jack are good, too)
- 2 green onions, thinly sliced
- 1 stalk celery, finely diced
- 1 large green bell pepper, sliced thinly (optional)
- hot sauce and/or additional green onions for serving, optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450°F.
- Coat sheet pan lightly with olive oil. Sprinkle oil evenly with cornmeal. Spread pizza dough on top of cornmeal, pushing crust to edge of pan. Pre-bake crust for 4 minutes in preheated oven.
- Meanwhile in a medium bowl, mix tuna (drain it first), mayonnaise, ½ cup cheddar cheese, green onion, and celery until combined. Taste and season with salt and pepper, as desired.
- Remove crust from oven. Carefully spread tuna mixture evenly on top of crust. Add remaining cheese and sliced green bell pepper; return pizza to oven.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until crust is golden brown, toppings are hot, and cheese is melted.
- Let pizza cool for 1 to 2 minutes before cutting and serving. Top with hot sauce or green onions, as desired, prior to serving.
Notes
- If you prefer, substitute a red bell pepper for the green pepper.
- Other kinds of cheese can be used (mozzarella, Monterey jack, etc.).
- Use any type of pizza dough or crust that you prefer, or make your own pizza dough.

I was a little skeptical of tuna pizza but it’s delicious and very economical. I’ve also used the same filling to make delicious quesadillas!
